Our background is Interior design starting out after qualifying in Interior Design & Decoration in 2004 from the award winning KLC School of Design Chelsea, London and Hugo & Otto was founded in 2014 with a beautiful high street boutique and online store by interior designer Caroline Bate to provide the very best in curated design led luxury dog beds for your dog and your lifestyle.
It was whilst completing an interior design scheme of works for clients in London in late 2008 that the seed was set for Hugo + Otto. Downtime for her clients included mud glorious mud, a boot room full of towels + warm comfortable dog beds. Newly purchased their dog beds looked comfortable and cosy for their two Pointers but, put to the test of the muddy dog + the washing machine they failed miserably resembling little more than lumpy rags in less than a few months.
Thinking about her own dog, a gorgeous Choccie labrador called Drum she agreed and went in search of a practical and durable dog beds. At best the choice of stylish bedding in England was limited and mostly covered with kitsch fabrics following the trend of using dotty or kitsch fabrics with low ratio rub tests. And so, Caroline commissioned an upholsterer to make to her own design.
The outer covers were made from 100% polyester upholstery fabrics with high martindale rub tests and easy zips to remove them on wash days. Pointers have long elegant legs and have a tendency to feel the heat and so they decided on using 100% hypoallergenic memory foam to offer vital spinal support and covered the mattress with a waterproof fabric that could be removed for cleaning. The result was 2 very happy Pointers and the planting of a seed of creating a company for luxury dog beds.
We all know this story, how many of us have been through this process and are constantly replacing dog beds because of poor quality and so Hugo + Otto was created as a change for good for our dogs offering curated design led dog products.
It took 6 years of planning and saving the funds to launch Hugo + Otto on the high street in Cheshire in 2014 and an online store. Bringing to the North West a new way of thinking in purchasing luxury dog bedding, beautiful products and great nutrition. Hugo + Otto launched to the UK marketplace award winning dog products by German makers MiaCara dogBar® & Cloud7. USA makers Woof New York, Wolfpack, MaxBone and Hennessy & Sons from Switzerland many of which she helped creatively launch in the UK. Caroline created the now famous EAT WALK PLAY SLEEP slogan on her website that many have followed since and soon we had clients around the globe as far south as New Zealand and North Canada and 30 or more countries in between.
We launched Hugo + Otto's own British handmade designs and luxury dog bed collections in November 2018 handmade in beautiful British wools from Abraham Moon, Linens from Ian Mankin and luxurious velvets from Prestigious Textiles. Our beautiful collections were debuted at the Christmas Shopping Event in the Cotswolds at the stunning Daylesford Organic Farm, glorious Goodwood race ground and in our pop up store in Fulham, London.
Being an interior designer Caroline has built up trade accounts with British and International fabric makers, specialist furniture, upholsters and curtain makers since qualifying in Interior Design & Decoration at KLC School of Design in Chelsea in 2004. Understanding upholstery fabric, colours and durability is vital to the design + making process. We search for technical upholstery fabrics that have high martindale rub tests of 80k + breathable, hypoallergenic, water and sun resistant + contain fabric protectors with Stain guard technology products like Fibreguard® & Easyclean® helping to withstand spillages from everyday life. These fabrics have become part of our commitment to our clients and their dogs.
We also invest in how we fill our dog beds, we only use Vasco 50 100% memory foam bases for many of our mattresses so that dogs not only feel cool but also have vital spinal support. Memory foam is hypoallergenic, dust mite free and moulds to the body of your dog helping our dog pals like Ralphy here dream of chasing furballs instead of counting sheep.
Being the designers and makers we can offer that journey of understanding a little easier by being transparent about how we work, where, who we employ and what we use to make our dog products. Every part is sourced in from British makers, sampled, made again and tested before we are ready to launch. We follow the B.Corporation guidelines of corporate responsibility and sustainability is at the forefront ensuring that we reduce our carbon footprint and our supply chain adopt the same solid principles for future proofing our business and being a purpose for good.
Hugo & Otto are members of ACID Anti Copying In Design and our makers are an established British business employing British makers for over 20 years in the Midlands taking on apprentices and who walk in step with us to provide the very best in time honoured British craftmanship.
